Familiarity

"I love grilled cheese sandwiches because I used to have them everyday" might just as well be "I hate grilled cheese sandwiches because I used to have them everyday." The one makes as much, or as little, sense as the other. Who knows where the difference comes from...

most of the time it's an associated (sometimes very tenuously) experience that shapes our sandwich taste.
i remember the first time i found out mum had cancer, my housemate at the time suggested we watch shrek to take my mind off it. i've be repulsed by shrek from then on. this is no fault of shrek, but the obviously link my brain has with illness and the movie.
i'd bet sandwich flavour preferences have similar connections, albeit less extreme.
associations like this are our way of making sense of the world.

Oh silly. Liking grilled cheese has nothing to do with how often you have them. It's all about the taste... with tomato soup. Duh!

good call on associations, luke.

and(drea), I never even had them with tomato soup!
